St. Joseph – Foster Father of the Lord
This Monday, March 19, is the feast of Saint Joseph, the pure spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and earthly father of Jesus Christ.  Though he was a humble laborer, Joseph was descended from the royal lineage of King David.
After his betrothal to Mary, he discovered that she was pregnant and sought to divorce her as quietly as possible in order to protect her from stoning.  But an angel of the Lord came to Joseph in a dream and told him that the child had been conceived by the Holy Spirit and that he should not be afraid to take Mary as his wife.
He was ever vigilant from that point on in protecting Mary and Jesus from harm.  He is the patron of the Mystical Body of Christ, fathers, the Christian family, and social justice.  Saint Joseph also has a special patronage over the dying, as it is believed that he passed away before Christ began his ministry and therefore with Jesus and Mary at his side.
